Record symptoms while they are available
'It does not work' cannot distinguish a power fault from an application error. Record the model, when the problem began, the message and preceding actions. Note mains and battery behaviour, recurrence after restarting and attached peripherals.
Photograph the error without personal information or record a short video. For intermittent faults, document steps and timing. Do not repeatedly reproduce a failure involving a burning smell, damaged battery or liquid: disconnect safely and arrange specialist assessment.
Identify data that must not be lost
Computer repair and data recovery are separate jobs. Before handover, state whether backups exist and which folders or applications are critical. Reinstalling, formatting or replacing a drive needs separate agreement, especially without another copy.
If the system is stable, copy important files to separate storage and verify they open. With symptoms of drive failure, repeated copying or random recovery utilities may worsen the situation. Clarify diagnosis first and avoid writing new data to the affected disk.
Provide only necessary access
Discuss a temporary test account if appropriate. Do not include your main email password and all personal credentials with the request. For a company device, coordinate handover with the IT owner and mention disk encryption.
Some hardware changes may require a recovery key. Share it only when necessary using an agreed protected channel. Record the device, charger, drives and accessories being handed over, including existing external damage.
Verify the original fault after repair
After diagnosis, request the cause, scope, cost and terms for replacement parts. Agree how additional faults will be approved. Simply starting the computer does not demonstrate that a fault occurring under load is resolved.
Repeat the original task and check required ports, charging, networking and agreed data. Clarify warranty terms for labour and parts. Remove temporary access after return and refresh your backup once the device is stable.
What to check
- Symptoms and handed-over items are recorded
- The service team understands data priorities
- Reinstallation and drive replacement need separate agreement
- The original scenario is tested after repair
