Decide what must keep running

A UPS may provide time to save a document, shut down a server or bridge a short outage. These are different objectives. List connected equipment and define the required duration for each scenario. Include the router and switch if network access must remain available.

Do not connect every nearby device automatically. Loads with high starting demand or heating elements need a separate documentation check. A UPS selected for a computer is not automatically suitable for a laser printer.

Check both power limits

UPS specifications include volt-amperes and watts. These are different quantities, and the connected load must remain within the applicable limits. A number on the front does not replace the specification. A computer power supply's rating is not its constant actual consumption.

For existing equipment, measure ordinary and high-load consumption. For a new system, use confirmed specifications and an agreed expansion margin. Do not apply the same arbitrary margin to every type of equipment.

Read the runtime chart at your load

Two UPS models with the same power rating can provide different battery runtimes. Check the exact model's chart at your load. Dividing battery capacity by watts does not guarantee duration: losses, discharge behaviour, battery condition and temperature matter.

Check battery replacement, kit availability and operating conditions. Generator compatibility and transfer arrangements need separate assessment. Do not modify electrical wiring to investigate this yourself; use a qualified specialist.

Configure and test system shutdown

A server must not only run briefly but receive the signal to shut down correctly. Check supported communication, software and the shutdown sequence for virtual machines and the host.

Test in an agreed maintenance window after verifying backups. Record timing, alerts and application shutdown. Decide what happens when power returns; automatic restart is not suitable for every system. Repeat testing when loads change and after battery service.

What to check

  • Load and required runtime are defined
  • Watt and volt-ampere limits are considered
  • The exact model's runtime chart is checked
  • System shutdown is agreed and tested
